About our grants

At a time when many cathedral and church music departments are battling with running costs, the FCM gives invaluable grants to assist in maintaining this priceless, 400-year-old heritage. In 2016 FCM gave nearly £600,000 in grants for a wide range of needs ranging from bursaries to music libraries.

By making grants to choirs, the Friends of Cathedral Music seeks to maintain and expand the work of choral foundations of cathedrals, collegiate churches and chapels and other appropriate places of worship.

Main grants are given as capital sums for an endowment in support of chorister scholarships, instrumental tuition and voice training for choristers, organ scholarships and funding for adult choral scholarships.

Smaller awards can also be made for the purchase of capital equipment such as rehearsal pianos and song school choir stalls.

Consideration will also be given to awarding grants to any other suitable scheme which will enhance the work of a music foundation but which is beyond local financial resources without outside assistance.

Thanks to a bequest made by the late Tony Harvey (a founder member of the FCM, instigator of our National Gatherings and latterly Vice-President of the FCM), a grant can also be made annually to a male choral scholar at an English cathedral. It is required that the award is made to a named choral scholar requiring financial support.

  • It is because of the support given by FCM that Peter Wright and those who work with him are able to achieve such very high standards.
