Cathedral Choirs’ Emergency Fund
In partnership with the Ouseley Church Music Trust, FCM has launched the Cathedral Choirs’ Emergency Fund to support choirs silenced during the COVID-19 national lockdown.
While singers in cathedral choirs have mostly been placed on furlough, a survey of their Directors of Music has revealed that they fear significant financial difficulties once restrictions are lifted and choirs reform.
Our survey has shown that many choral foundations across the UK will struggle to survive the next few months without additional financial support. The UK is the only country in the world where the tradition of daily sung liturgy in cathedrals has been so widely maintained. This precious inheritance is now clearly at risk.
We need to make sure they return to the musical excellence for which they are renowned throughout the world. However, it has become clear that this will only happen with significant additional funds.
The Cathedral Choirs’ Emergency Fund aims to raise £1 million and make grants to cathedral choral foundations in need. Both FCM and OCMT have committed to making initial contributions of £250,000 each towards the target.
We need to do everything in our power to uphold the great tradition of fine sacred choral music. We will work together and with other charities to raise funds to provide financial assistance as the response to this crisis unfolds. Our aim is to ensure that choirs can remain together and return to their normal high standards of performance once the buildings are opened again.
We strongly urge anyone who values this unique tradition to consider making a donation.
