D is for…Derby
Welcome to day 4 of our Alphabetical Advent Adventure
Wednesday is a day off for Derby Cathedral’s choristers, well deserved after the excitement of Advent Sunday, when the boys and lay clerks sang Lloyd’s ‘Drop down ye heavens’ and Dove’s ‘Seek him that maketh the seven stars’ and the girls sang (very appropriately, for us) ‘Advent Calendar’ by Philip Ledger and Stanford’s ‘Song of Peace’.
Rachel, the Head Girl Chorister, said,
“I love how Stanford introduces the ‘Veni Emmanuel’. Stanford’s changing musical style is quite challenging, but it is exactly this which gives the music such shape and produces a wonderful piece to sing.”
Amidst the usual round of Sunday and weekday services, the choir is preparing for ‘Sing Christmas’, an informal carol service on 23 December as well as a more traditional services on 22 December, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
It seems a long way off at present, but we at FCM are looking forward to visiting Derby in June for one of our 2020 National Gatherings (more information here). To celebrate this, FCM and the Cathedral have launched a competition inviting composers to submit a Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis (The Derby Service). The winning entry will be premiered at Evensong on Sunday 14 June, during our Gathering.
By donating to FCM, you can help support choristers like these at Derby.
