Recording of the Month: July 2016
Evensong Live 2016 KGS0015
The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge directed by Stephen Cleobury
Evensong Live 2016 is a selection of some of the best weekly webcasts recorded during the preceding academic year (2014-15). Services at King’s College Chapel are recorded using a state-of- the-art recording system concealed in the roof, vestry and organ loft. Microphones are suspended discreetly above the choir stalls recording each of the Choir’s services. Webcasts are posted every Saturday and are available at www.kings.cam.ac.uk/choir/webcasts.html. This album includes the best performances during the year as selected by the choir’s Director of Music, Stephen Cleobury. The tracks include works by Parry, Stanford, Vaughan-Williams, Walton, Purcell, Gibbons, Tye, Leighton, Tippett, Messiaen, Howells, Benjamin, Grier and Judith Weir.
The CD also includes the world-premiere recording of Francis Grier’s Magnificamus. A former King’s organ scholar, Grier has contributed much to the Anglican choral repertoire, his works being commissioned by Westminster Abbey, Durham, Edinburgh, Salisbury and Winchester cathedrals. St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle commissioned a setting of his Psalm 150 to celebrate the Queen’s 70th birthday.
